The Courtyard of the "Royals" of Red Canyon

The shapes of these rocks look like people. I call them the "Royals" in stone. They have a whole courtyard with lots of “servants", beautiful fur trees and walkways. Plus the view from the top is gigantic.

Red Canyon Entrance

Depending on the light conditions, these rocks can really be extremely red and beautiful. Red Canyon is on Highway 12 in Utah.

Red Canyon, Utah

After hours and hours on Hwy 89 in Utah we turned right into Hwy 12 not thinking about anything exciting to come our way. But suddenly there was this rock greeting us. Our attention spiked tremendously.

Leaving Zion Park

Below the impressive mountains there runs Hwy 9, which winds through the whole park. Lots of people were leaving towards the East Gate. It was a gorgeous sunny day and saying good bye to the mountains was not easy. But new exciting journeys were calling.

Upper Emerald Pool

It's impossible to get a good look at the Zion Park Waterfall of the Upper Emerald Pool. The canyon at this spot is so tight. That day not much water came over the rocks and the pool below was half empty. But from the broken trees one can imagine that after the winter lots of water might be rushing down the fall.

Emerald Pool Close-up

This is what the rocks look like underneath the waterfall of the upper Emerald Pool in the Zion Park. People who study rocks know what all these different colors mean. And on top of all this rock there are trees growing on the steep canyon walls and little plants.

Upper Emerald Waterfall

The Waterfall inside the Zion Park Canyon was pretty dry as it had not rained for a while. I took the photo because it is like looking inside those huge mountains. This is what they are made of: crystals and salts and copper. I find that amazing. And up on the mountain there grow a bunch of trees, even some large ones. I sure hope the dirt will hold onto the mountain when the rain comes, so the trees can continue to grow.

Close-up Upper Emerald

This is like looking inside one of those huge mountains. This is what they are made off. And one quarter up the mountain grow a bunch of trees. Sure hope the dirt will stay for them to continue to grow.

Hiking in Zion Park

It is an interesting hike up to the Upper Emerald Pool with lots of great views of the cliffs and vegetation. They are keeping the walkway pretty nice, even people with little kids can manage it. And here is a little bench of tree roots for someone to take a rest, as it can get pretty hot in the summer walking along the canyon walls.

Virgin River, Zion Park

Hikers heading for the Emerald Pools Trail crossing the Virgin River. It's a great walk up and down the mountain with an easy gradient so even kids and older folks can manage it. At the end there is a waterfall which was not very strong at that day. But it created some nice fresh air to breath.

Virgin River Bridge

In order to get to the Upper Emerald Pools, where the water falls over the rocks, sometimes stronger and sometimes less, you need to cross the bridge and then turn right and up into the mountains. It's a great walkway, not too difficult, but it can get hot during the summer, walking along the steep mountain walls.

Zion Park Phototour

Zion Park Beauties

Along these fantastic mountains inside the Zion National Park in Utah flows the Virgin River. Some times it is pretty calm but when the snow melts or a storm moves through, it can be wild and fast flowing. A plane is in the air, possibly from Salt Lake City going South.

Mountain Creek in Zion Park

Hiking in Zion Canyon Park is very exciting. The colors of the mountains change constantly depending on the sun and the clouds, and with mist moving into the canyon, the rocks look very dark, even though it is still morning.

Zion Park Giants

The Zion National Park has gigantic mountains forming a narrow canyon. Visitors park outside the canyon across from SR 9 and drive into the canyon by shuttle, which is very convenient. It’s very well organized and makes a lot of stops. There are also places to rest and eat, but mostly many wonderful hiking trails to use.

At Zion Park

The colors in the Park are very bright with very dark shadows. And the sky is often unreal in color.
