Beautiful California

These grassy, soft looking hills are very typical for Southern California. In the background is Morro Bay with the famous Morro Rock, which is an ancient volcanic mound at the end of Morro Rock Beach.

San Miguel, California

It seems that San Miguel was once a busy town in San Luis Obispo County, California. It was an important station because of travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Today it has about 2,000 inhabitants and some of their buildings did not withstand the test of time.

Once it had a Purpose

No idea what this was used for, but it's right next to an old factory and the train tracks. And not considering that there was still a train running, two huge Union Pacific engines came roaring by. And all that in San Miguel with those beautiful soft yellow hills in the background. They have the most picturesque ranches around here.

Union Pacific in San Miguel

Two Union Pacific Railroad engines with never ending freight wagons came roaring by while we stood there taking all kinds of pictures. We had no idea the railroad line was still active. Standing directly on the tracks taking pictures. But we found out it's a main line from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Three Amigos

This was along California Hwy 101. Those three really look funny in the middle of the hills. Meanwhile I learned why they have so many overland electric lines instead of underground, the reason is because of Earthquakes. It seems to be easier to repair them.

Wine Country

Huddled against the mountains the California grapes are loving the climate. The trees are important and beautiful. They house birds that eat the insects. This is South of San Francisco. A beautiful sunny midday scenery.

Sunny California Afternoon

In Monterey's back country there are some gorgeous ranches. This is Harry's Ranch with those beautiful old wine barrels telling us that there is or was a vineyard, but we did not want to disturb them to find out.

Carmel Rancho, California

It's Lunch Time at the high traffic corner at Carmel Valley Road and California Hwy 1. I like to capture working machinery with a beautiful background like the California Coastal Mountains. This Carmel Rancho Shopping Center is the place to go shopping before heading out to Big Sur, as there are only limited possibilities to buy anything.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

They have a beautiful golden beach, at least that’s how the sand glows when the bright sun comes through the fog in the morning. We tried to get into the water that day but it was ice cold.

Hiking along the Pacific Coast

There are only a few trails at this stretch of the California Hwy 1, but when there is a parking place, then it's for sure crowded. So we had to check out the next one. But looking at the Cedar trees was a real pleasure. Those trees love the cold moisture coming over from the Pacific Ocean which runs right right next to the Hwy on the left.

Driving North on Pacific Highway 1

Now comes a sharp turn to the right and then left along the mountain. And that goes on for miles and miles. But you have the fantastic view of the ocean on your left and the California fauna on your right.

Big Sur Campground

This feels like being in another World. It's totally off the beaten path. No TV, no Internet, Just 1 Phone booth, which is still working. A few small restaurants, a tiny postoffice and a gas station, but many gorgeous Red Wood trees and a river.

Big Sur Chevron

This is the only gas station in Big Sur. It's wonderful that they keep the environment original as much as possible.
