It never is so obvious how the weather and the clouds influence what we see in nature, unless we photograph the same scenario over a period of time. Usually these Sierra Nevada Mountains shine in sunlight and the ground of the Alabama Hills in California is colorful in brown and yellow. But with a storm like this, everything looks suddenly all gray and kind of dull. But it has a very special atmosphere.

These rocks at Alabama Hills send out very distinct vibrations, like they are talking to you from a distant time. How did they end up in this formation? They sure don't look like any other mountains around here. It's an absolute magical place.

He has a beautiful view from up there towards the huge mountain range around Mount Whitney. This is in the Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine in California. I guess I need to find my own spot to catch the sunset.

Way up there is the Tuttle Creek Trail which leads to an abandoned stone building known as "The Tuttle Creek Ashram" located at an altitude of 7,600 feet. And behind the mountains is Sequoia National Forest, one of our next stops. But we can't get there from here by car, the mountain range is too high and wild. Got to go all around the Sierra Nevada.

Observing the storm clouds rolling into the Alabama Hills in California. Somewhere up there in the clouds is Mount Whitney which is the tallest mountain in the Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 14,500 feet. I read you can hike up to 13,500 feet but that it's getting a bit rough towards the top.

We enjoyed the “Welcome” by those two red fire engines. It was a lovely morning. The Sierra Nevada presented itself in a beautiful light with dark shadows. But again Mt. McKinley was not visible. It's gotta be one of those peaks.

Traveling on Hwy 136 from Keeler towards Lone Pine in California. The mountains of the Sierra Nevada are cloaked in clouds. I wanted to see Mt. McKinley. Well, maybe later. Way over on foot of the Sierras runs Hwy 395.

It used to be a very lush lake with lots of plants and animals behind Keeler on Hwy 136. But years ago Los Angeles needed water and built a canal and emptied the lake. Now they have to pay to get the lake going again. And lots of birds returned already. But it's still dry and salty all around.

This was the gate to the gentleman's lot where he had his colorful trailer parked. I'm sure he had a gorgeous view onto Owens Lake in Keeler, California, when the lake was still full of water and fish and was visited by lots of birds. When the water was stolen by Los Angeles, the lake turned into a salt desert.

This is Keeler in California on the East shore of Owens Lake on Hwy 136. It is a typical picture of a once bustling little town that has lost its industry and means of living. There are many of these small towns in the West that got caught in the changing times and needs.

6:34 Time to get active. Jochen was setting up the tripod at the viewpoint called the Father Crowley Vista Point where you can take a look into Rainbow Canyon. They also call it Star Wars Canyon as they did some filming here. It's close to Panamint Springs along H-190 in the Death Valley National Park, California.

Early morning en route from Death Valley across the mountains towards Lone Pine, California. It's very dry up here and cold. I wonder if another one of those Military jets is showing up through the “Star Wars Canyon”, which they named ever since they shot some scenes here for the movies.
