The Alabama Hills in CA

It was a cold morning in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California, but the view of the sunrise behind those rocks was so enlightening that I forgot about the cold. The reward an hour later was a hot cup of coffee and seeing this picture on my camera.

Morning Has Broken

Oh, what an amazing sunrise! Alabama Hills is still in the dark and it's cold. Wild campers are resting peacefully in this safe environment. It's gonna be a great day for hiking!

En-Route to Lone Pine

Driving up towards Lone Pine in California, on SR 395, one sees this huge mountain range always on the left side. One of these big mountains in the clouds is Mount Whitney.

Near Lone Pine, California

When traveling the desert, there is a time when you long for green trees with lovely shades and life giving meadows. This we found on Route 395 near Lone Pine in California. Route 395 runs along the Western side of the Death Valley.

Early Morning at the Alabama Hills.

The raven is already up in the air inspecting the Alabama Hills from above. It's his time for breakfast while everyone else is still sleeping. The county is so nice to let people camp where ever they want. It's gonna be a beautiful hiking day.

Pale Light at Sunrise

It's cold and windy. The sun is rising behind some clouds, painting the sky and the landscape in a pale, blueish light. This area is called the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine in California. The formation and placement of those huge rocks is very unique. Like giants played with rocks and just left them there unattended in the middle of the game.

A Storm is Coming

Just before the storm hit the Alabama Hills in California, the sky and the rocks had a very different taint. Usually those brown rocks look rough and unfamiliar, but the sky made them look soft and lovable. Look at that sweet “face”.

Sierra Nevada Storm

It never is so obvious how the weather and the clouds influence what we see in nature, unless we photograph the same scenario over a period of time. Usually these Sierra Nevada Mountains shine in sunlight and the ground of the Alabama Hills in California is colorful in brown and yellow. But with a storm like this, everything looks suddenly all gray and kind of dull. But it has a very special atmosphere.

Bizarre Rocks

These rocks at Alabama Hills send out very distinct vibrations, like they are talking to you from a distant time. How did they end up in this formation? They sure don't look like any other mountains around here. It's an absolute magical place.

Waiting for Sunset

He has a beautiful view from up there towards the huge mountain range around Mount Whitney. This is in the Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine in California. I guess I need to find my own spot to catch the sunset.

View from Alabama Hills

Way up there is the Tuttle Creek Trail which leads to an abandoned stone building known as "The Tuttle Creek Ashram" located at an altitude of 7,600 feet. And behind the mountains is Sequoia National Forest, one of our next stops. But we can't get there from here by car, the mountain range is too high and wild. Got to go all around the Sierra Nevada.

Lone Pine Film Museum

The Museum of Western Film History is located in Lone Pine, California. The environs have appeared as the backdrop for classics starring Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, and John Wayne. Also Kevin Costner’s "The Postman" and in 2013 "The Lone Ranger" were done there.

Welcome to Lone Pine

We enjoyed the “Welcome” by those two red fire engines. It was a lovely morning. The Sierra Nevada presented itself in a beautiful light with dark shadows. But again Mt. McKinley was not visible. It's gotta be one of those peaks.
