Camping in the West

We were so happy to find this place where it was OK to camp wild in the desert. Considering the amazing view this was a great gift. Way in the distance on the left is State Hwy 24, Torrey, Utah.

High Country in Utah.

When leaving the Zion Park Canyon East on SR 9 it goes up and up until one reaches the high desert which is dry and rough. But there are some ranches nestled beneath the mountains with beautiful horses.

Rim Rock Inn

This little Inn looks like a rustic, western style place. Gotta check it out for dinner. Some ways in the distance, going East, are the Capitol Reef Mountains, and behind us is Torrey on Hwy 24 in Utah. It’s an overcast afternoon, the mountains look kind of dull, so it’s time to relax.

Kanab in Utah

Little wooden building with a bell tower. Might have been a chapel. The town Kanab was settled in 1864 by a few Mormon Families. Kanab has lovely little stores and restaurants with very friendly people. They used to shoot films in Kanab from the Hollywood days of 1936 till 1979. U.S. Routes 89 and 89A meet in the center of town connecting it to all the large National Parks in Utah and Arizona.

Western Ranch

These two lovely horses we met while cruising Torrey in Utah. They were very much enjoying our attention as nobody else was around there.

View of the Valley

At about 12,000 feet elevation on Hwy 12 in Utah, it's cold and overcast. The mountain range in the distance is Colorado. There it a tiny ray of sunlight on the foothills. So we hope for a beautiful new day.

Gigantic Rocks in Utah

Looks like the entrance to the land of the giants. It's a cloudy and kind of cold day. These rocks are on Hwy 12 along the Escalante National Park in Utah. After every turn in the road there is something exciting to see, some rocks are dark red, some are yellowish, some are grey and some are like these, all colors mixed together. It looks like someone had a lot of fun with its creation.

At The Koffeehouse

This is Hwy 12 in Utah running behind the famous Koffeehouse. I believe the whole area is part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The morning started out with dark clouds, then a little light came through painting the rocks in a soft red tone. There must be a creek in the distance where a bunch of trees grow between the red rocks. Really an amazing landscape.

Kiva Koffeehouse

Driving by on Hwy 12 in Utah, you don't really see the little cafe. It's tucked behind a hill among huge red mountains. They did a great job building it. Amazing how they fixed the beams for the roof to those huge tree trunks. The reflections are also interesting. I have no idea what I actually saw looking into the window and out the back window and back door. What a neat place!

Cafe Among The Rocks

After leaving the Head of the Rocks Overlook where you can see far into the land, we stopped at a little Hill with a sign, across from some beautiful red rocks. What a surprise it was to find a building tucked away behind the hill. It turned out to be this artistic Kiva Koffeehouse shown in the next picture.

Stormy Morning

Near Escalante on Hwy 12 in Utah. After hours of red and colorful mountains suddenly the character of the stone changes dramatically and the land is rocky and kind of flat. That's Hwy 12 running down there. I believe the whole area is part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Sun Ray touching the Grand Canyon

After a cold and stormy day at the Grand Canyon, just before sunset there was this strong beam of light touching the canyon for a few seconds and then it was gone again. It was an awe inspiring moment.

Time Stands Still

State Road 89 in Utah heading North. It's an amazingly beautiful landscape and it goes on for miles and miles. Soon it will be getting dark. Need to find a place for the night.

Once it was a dream.

Found this old hut along the road. It is fascinating to imagine how some time ago a person had the idea to build it, live there, maybe have a family with kids growing up. And then years went by, the hut is empty and falling apart.

24 Miles to Where?

Coming from Zion Park going North via State Road 89 to HWY 12. It's a beautiful landscape for miles and miles...Not much traffic, bizarre mountains, very unusual colors.

Springtime at Red Rock Canyon.

It was a rainy, dark morning at Red Rock Canyon in Utah. For a moment the sun came through the clouds forming this huge round circle. The formation of the rocks and the color is very similar to Bryce Canyon.

Death of a Tree

As sad as it is to see a tree die, even if he is already old, we can't forget that it is a part of life. On a happier note, I am sure he spread out a lot of his seeds while he was alive, and possibly he fed many birds and deer. In other words, he might have had a very fulfilled life.

Picturesque Tree

The higher elevation of Red Canyon seems to be a rough area for trees. Down below they are strong and straight and have green and thick needles. But up here it looks like water was missing. Still the trunk of the tree and the branches give a beautiful addition to the scenery, and I am thankful for that.
