Rocky Beach

Rough California Coastline

The Pacific Ocean is usually a bit rough and really cold, even in summer. On this evening the sun was setting soon, strong haze moved inland and it got cold quickly. A bird was checking us out. This wild coast is North of San Simeon on the famous Highway 1 between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Hazy Afternoon at the Beach

This is a stretch of the San Simeon Coastline that is filled with these lovely plants. They seem to like the daily breeze from the Pacific Ocean bringing in the hazy fresh air and often fog and rain. This shot is straight against the sun, showing off the haze in the air.

Enjoying the Breeze

This is a typical California beach scene around San Simeon and Cambria. It's sunny and windy at mostly empty beaches. You can walk for miles and miles. It's fantastic for photographers as there are so many colorful coastlines with bizarre rocks and driftwood.

Picco Avenue, San Simeon

These nice people think of everything! They not only have a huge fire ring out here but also benches and a chess set. And all that right next to the Pacific Ocean with a great restaurant and hotel. What can you ask for more?

San Simeon Area

Beautiful day at the San Simeon Coast in California. This is close to Hearst Castle and Cambria which is a gorgeous little town. Most of the beaches are empty but here a few people are playing in the distance. You can walk for miles and miles without meeting anyone.

California Scenery

This beautiful horse was happy to see us. He greeted us with a friendly whinny. His corral had shade and water meaning he had everything he needed, just not a companion to be with. This was on Hwy 1 close to Cambria.

Beautiful California

These grassy, soft looking hills are very typical for Southern California. In the background is Morro Bay with the famous Morro Rock, which is an ancient volcanic mound at the end of Morro Rock Beach.

San Miguel, California

It seems that San Miguel was once a busy town in San Luis Obispo County, California. It was an important station because of travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Today it has about 2,000 inhabitants and some of their buildings did not withstand the test of time.

Once it had a Purpose

No idea what this was used for, but it's right next to an old factory and the train tracks. And not considering that there was still a train running, two huge Union Pacific engines came roaring by. And all that in San Miguel with those beautiful soft yellow hills in the background. They have the most picturesque ranches around here.

Union Pacific in San Miguel

Two Union Pacific Railroad engines with never ending freight wagons came roaring by while we stood there taking all kinds of pictures. We had no idea the railroad line was still active. Standing directly on the tracks taking pictures. But we found out it's a main line from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Three Amigos

This was along California Hwy 101. Those three really look funny in the middle of the hills. Meanwhile I learned why they have so many overland electric lines instead of underground, the reason is because of Earthquakes. It seems to be easier to repair them.
